The 147 did very
poorly in the frontal impact, exposing its occupants to serious
risks and losing all but three marks available in testing. The
car’s safety cell became compromised because the screen pillar and
door failed along spot weld seams and crimped seams and the beam
running behind the fascia was driven rearwards relative to the
screen pillars. The safety restraints did not protect the driver
adequately and his head struck the fascia. By contrast, it protected
well in the side impact, gaining a maximum score for the test. Its
head-protecting airbag proved itself highly effective. |

Frontal
Impact
|
 |
|
| The
driver’s head moved past the airbag and struck the fascia,
increasing his chances of severe injury. There was also criticism
because the steering wheel pushed rearwards and to the right. Hard
areas under the fascia put the driver’s knees and upper legs in
jeopardy. Finally, the centre rear seat was equipped with a static,
lap-only belt. This gives less protection than a three-point belt. |
Side
Impact
|
 |
|
| The
147 is fitted with a side airbag to protect the driver’s body, and
a side air curtain cushioned occupants’ heads. Both helped the 147
achieve full marks in this part of the test. Its three-star rating
is largely thanks to this performance. |
Child
Restraint
|
 |
|
| The
147 is equipped with an on/off switch for the passenger airbag and
this is sited at the right-hand end of the fascia. Instructions
given for its use need to be made clearer and the danger of using a
rear-facing restraint on the passenger seat when the airbag is an
activated needs emphasising. In particular there was no warning of
serious injury or death if used incorrectly. The three-year-old’s
seat was forward-facing and the younger child’s was was
rear-facing. Fitting the latter in this three-door car proved
difficult, not least because it must be anchored to the front seat,
which then must be folded and slid to access the rear Otherwise, the
restraints worked reasonably well. |
Pedestrian
Protection
|
 |
|
| Like
others tested, the protection offered was poor. The bonnet gave some
protection where heads might strike it but the front threatened
legs. |
Model
history and safety equipment
|
 |
|
| The
147 was launched in Europe during 2000/2001. Safety equipment fitted
as standard to the 2001 model includes twin front airbags, side
airbags and head protection airbags, pre-tensioners and load
limiters on the front seat belts, and ABS. |
